Linen Closet Organization: Start Here If You Don't Know Where to Begin

I used to close the linen closet and walk away like that counted as a plan.

Take everything out. I mean everything.

It feels dramatic. Do it anyway.

Put a sheet on the floor, or use the bed. Wipe the shelves. You will find towels nobody likes, a sheet set for a bed you do not have anymore, and things that are not linen at all.

Three piles: keep, give away, does not belong here. Gift wrap and chargers can leave.

A simple household rule helps: about two to three sheet sets per bed, and two to three towels per person. Enough for one in use, one in the wash, one spare.

Sort by how you actually live

Not by color. By job.

Everyday sets at eye level. Guest sets in one spot. Seasonal quilts and heavy comforters on another shelf, or in a bigger bin. Towels together if you have the room.

Other people will not rebuild your perfect stack. They grab and go. The system has to survive 10 p.m.

Give the sheets a home that is not a pile

Leave a little empty

A closet stuffed to the door lasts about four days. Then laundry comes back and has nowhere to go. Leave a gap.

If dirty laundry is living on the closet floor, give it a lid somewhere that is not the linen shelf. A lot of "linen closet problems" are just laundry with nowhere else to sit.

What I would do this weekend

1. Empty it. Wipe the shelves. Be honest about the keep pile.
2. Everyday sheet sets at eye level, one set per box.
